Since its creation in 1927, epoxy flooring has been one of the most trusted flooring systems in the commercial industry but when we fast forward to today, epoxy has become a trusted system in commercial, industrial and even residential settings. Why? Well, epoxy flooring is one of the most protective coatings for your concrete as it can be up to 4 times stronger than concrete with a weight tolerance of 14,000 PSI.
Epoxies have 2 major variations, solvent-based systems, and the 100% solid epoxy system, the solid systems being the more durable of the 2. 100% solid epoxies are used in commercial and industrial settings, in metallic epoxy and in some residential garages where solvent-based epoxies make up roughly 85% of the residential epoxy market for its more than adequate protection and affordable price tag.

Now that we know what the benefits of epoxy floors are, let’s talk a little more about what epoxy flooring is. As we have stated above, we use 2 types of epoxy, 100% solid systems and solvent-based systems. 100 % solid systems are comprised of 2 parts, and epoxy resin and a urethane hardener. When mixed, a chemical reaction occurs on the concrete, resulting in a durable plastic-like material. Solvent-based epoxy, on the other hand, isn’t a pure mixture of epoxy and hardener. Most solvent-based epoxies use water as a filler. This additive makes solvent-based epoxies less durable and has longer cure times of up to 72 hours where 100% solids epoxy systems have a cure time of only 24 hours before they are ready for full usage.
When it comes to the different variations of epoxy flooring, no other system stands out quite like an epoxy flooring system. Metallic epoxy is a variation of epoxy flooring that uses the 100% solid epoxy system but with an additive of metallic pigments which are then moved around using solvents, blowers, brushes, and squeegees to create custom finishes that mimic the appearance of waves, clouds, and even lava.
Even though metallic epoxy coatings have an attractive finish, they are no harder to maintain than a standard epoxy so all you will need is a soft-bristle broom and a mop paired with a PH neutral cleaner to keep your epoxy clean. An interesting fact about metallic epoxy is that no 2 systems are the same and will never be perfectly replicable, not even by the original contractor.
